Cold and trembling, beginning to feel hungry, Mary had no other choice but to spend the night in the branches of the old tree.  It wasn’t like she was ever going to come back down.  Maybe she could catch the kids on their way to school tomorrow and ask them to hand her up a sandwich and a thermos of coffee.  Later when her husband came home, she would ask him to toss her that old emergency blanket that he keeps in the trunk of his car.

She waved at Cheryl, her neighbor, who looked warm and comfortable in her light jacket, sitting in her willow tree two houses down.
"I guess I should have been more prepared."  Mary shouted to her friend, wishing she had thought to put a candy bar or even a pack of gum in her pocket.

"Don’t worry Hon, you’ll get the hang of it soon enough!"  Cheryl yelled back. The other women perched high in their trees, murmured in agreement, their voices traveling from all over the block in the cool night air.

Shivering, Mary nestled deeper into the thick green leaves of the big oak tree, reminding herself that the weather would be nicer, now that summer was almost here.  There would be endless warm days and nights all her own, to ponder and dream on.

She tried to imagine the scene that was probably taking place behind the walls of her former home.  She could almost see the breakfast dishes still on the table, the piles of dirty laundry, beds unmade.  She thought she could hear the TV blaring from Tommy’s room, the baby wailing, dogs barking.

For a brief moment before she dropped off to sleep, she wondered how they would ever manage with out her.

"Oh well, she thought sleepily, that’s not really my problem anymore."

This sure was interesting.. Now I'm curious, why are all the women up in trees?  LOL, You can't just leave a reader wondering like that!  What you've written so far though shows promise!

I don't think I really know myself!  Maybe she was driven to it?

Those darn kids...lol

Thanks, I know I'll be working on this one for a while!

Hmmm... a theory... sheltered in the boughs of the trees, away from the pains and stresses of life. But once there, find that it's not quite as comfortable being sheltered away as one might have thought... it could pose as an interesting analogy to lofe.

I like!

Don't we all wish this from time to time.  Just escape.  Short and sweet, and enjoyable.
Good job.
