There it stood, tall and majestic, reaching for the sun as it had for years. The tree was maple and it gave us shade and comfort in the summer heat. It had stood in that spot for at least 40 years, for I remember it from when I was a child. Growing, reaching, comforting. Now it is marred and misshapen; it's blood had been spilled that night, only weeks ago. A bite had been taken from the sturdy trunk and now a community grieves. Four young boys at a sleep over decided they needed to have some fun; 17 and 18 years old respectively. Old enough to drive yet not old enough to drink. Such an unfair world we live in. Now 3 sons are dead and one has to live with what he had done. The driver of the ugly beast that took a bite out of the majestic maple survives to live with what he has done. His friends, his peers and his heart died only weeks ago. Alcohol and speed are deadly bed partners when all you really wanted was some fun. My community grieves the loss of out future generations. My community grieves the loss of 4 of our brightest stars. When will we learn that alcohol and a metal beast on wheels do not mix? When will the lessons of past generation fall on open ears? When will the killing stop? * note from the author. A week and a half ago 4 young boys were in a car wreck. The reason for the wreck was a combination of alcohol and speed. These boys were 17 & 18 years old respectively. There is a maple tree on the road I drive to and from work everyday. It has stood tall since I was but a child. There in it's trunk is a memorial to the 3 who died and the one who must live with the tragedy for the rest of his life. Long live that tree lest we forget. Ahhh... Another piece on drunk driving.. this is something in our society that should not be there. It doesn't make any sense to me, drinking seems like such a total waste, I plan on being sober. I enjoyed the piece much, Marilyn. Long live the maple. Abrahm Simons Put one foot on the path of life and tread the dagger's path betwixt dark and light. |

This is a well-written piece, and very true. Not long ago, there was a four car pile-up in my area. Two of the cars were teenagers racing, one was a drunk driver, and one was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Three were killed. You may have read my poem about it, "It's over so fast". This happens a whole lot, but I don't see a fast solution to the problem... "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -Oscar Wilde |

Nicely written Marilyn ... I wish I could say that you are going to run out of stories to write about ... but while there's alcohol it won't stop ... you might have a better chance at stopping the auto makers from building the cars ... at least they might listen Rex}<{{{{o> |

Abe..thanks for your comment. Love Bug...Foolishness is a difficult thing to fight. I do not know how to fight this beast either. *sigh* Rex..Unfortunately you are right. Even when alcohol was prohibited there was drinking and driving. When will we ever learn from our mistakes? |
