Treasure Box

When I was a little girl, I had a treasure box. Actually, it was a wooden box, long, narrow and deep. Now I realize it looked much like a geometry problem I wrestled with in high school. I had a treasure box. My father gave one to each of us children and they were are sacred places to place those treasures we could not bare to part with. I don't really remember what was in mine. But, I do remember one of my sister's. She had books I could look at if I was nice to her and she had a beautiful sugar rose from an old birthday cake. The rose was wrapped carefully in toilet paper and kept in her tin Three Little Pigs box, and then tucked carefully in her treasure box. When our prized possessions overwhelmed our rooms, it was time to clean the stash out and make room for new treasures ~ more treasures.

A lot of my treasures went to the Fairy Store. My sister (the one with the rose, which became very disgusting in time, I might add) led me to the woods one day. I was five and she was eleven. We crouched under the spruce trees as she carefully laid out a board over the roots that grew above the ground. On that board, I arranged the small trinkets that fairies would buy. Monopoly houses, empty spools of thread, jacks, a lone cup from an old tea set were laid out with care for the fairies to see and buy. Every day I would run out to see if they had bought anything and they always had.

To this day, I thank my sister for instilling within me that fairies do exist. For I have seen what they like to buy, even though I never saw them. Magic filled my life; I just never knew it was magic. Tea sets made from egg cartons miraculously appeared. They had intricate designs and were just right for the pudgy hands of a preschooler. A rag doll with green braids became my dearest friend. Her name is Janie and she is part of my life years later.

The magic created by that same sister continues to live in me. Just as I still have a treasure box. It remains a sacred place; often I don't look at it for years. However, that day will come again. The day when I think I have grown up ~ maybe I am too jaded. I wander to the box and sit cross legged on the floor. My face lights up as I slowly inventory my treasures. Magic is in the air again, as years spin away. And, once again, I am five with eyes dancing with the knowledge that my world is filled with those who love me and care for me. My fingers touch these possessions that have become memories of the adventures of my life.

I have a treasure box.

Alison,
Your sister was incredibly mature for her age and, I'm sure, a huge blessing in your life. I have a treasure box too but I had to make my own. Lovely write and thank you for sharing.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

The lessons we learn in childhood are always the most precious...and when we have an opportunity to pass on such love that was gifted to us...then that is when the magic lives on!

Hugs to your sister
for instilling such love.
