The horizon laid blanketed with virgin snowfall, shimmering like nothing I’d ever seen before. Bathed in the gentle moonlight, it seemed as near to perfection as something could become in this realm. I was entranced by the beauty for a moment, unable to move or think. After gazing quietly for a moment, I dared to look behind me. My weary emerald eyes filled with tears as I beheld the sight. All that remained was empty, dead, abandoned. The shards of broken dreams laid scattered upon the scarlet soil in the form of lifeless carcasses. The darkness swirled in a thick, curling smog, licking at my hooves and the tip of my silver tail. All that was once my life was enveloped within the black haze. I instantly became locked upon the past, unable to face forward. My soul was screaming, and yet there was no one left to hear my cries. “I...I don’t know how to move on. I don’t know where to go from here.” I whispered, my words being caught by a familiar breeze and swept away from my twitching ears. Cautiously, I moved forward several steps, although I wanted nothing more than to just fall into the night and cease to exist. I knew for the first time that even a solitary soul such as mine could not live an eternity alone. Memories flashed through my mind as I stood at the threshold between a horrid past and the soft glimmer of an uncertain future. Everything used to be so green, so bright, so filled with harmonious life. Sunlight used to stream through whisps of creamy cloud and the waters used to sparkle with fairy dust. My kind used to roam here, often alone yes, but never truly abandoned. There was always the reflection of a silver horn glinting somewhere within the valley. There was always a place to turn if one’s heart was to become heavy with the pain of the world. But with the good memories, the bad also returned to me. The evils of man plundering my home, raping the tender wilderness of all it’s beauty, and destroying precious life with a blind eye. Reducing the creatures here to nothing more than fanciful myths believed only in the hearts of tender babes. The pain of what I had experienced and seen ripped through me. But perhaps knowing great pain is the only way to true wisdom. Nevertheless, being wiser was but a feeble reward in light of loosing everything I’d ever known. The valley, smothered in the blood of my kin, beckoned to me with a dark, almost irresistible force. I knew to return there would be my death, however. Man would capture me as they did everyone else, drive their cruel, twisted daggers through my heart, and tear my golden horn from my head. And I just could not accept such a fate. So, with a stern resolution in my eyes, I turned my back on my home. The soft snowfall gracing the distant horizon looked warmer, more inviting now. I had made my choice. I trotted off through the thick blanket of white and my heart began to feel lighter. I wondered what I, the final unicorn, could offer to a world who believed in me only in myth. I knew that I would find a way to reach the ones that needed me....somehow, I would find them. *Krista Knutson* I do this so this world will know that it will not change me....-GB |

Wow, I can see such a vivid picture from your details. Hopefully that unicorn finds those in need. Great job. ![]() Luv ya Kelly Love breaths when you're out of breath, Love sits by the bedside when you're near to death, and Love still feels it when the feelings gone, Love lives on and on. Kwissa~~ Wonderful story. It seemed as if I the story was coming alive right in front of me, and I was just standing there, watching. I've always been interested in unicorns, so I enjoyed it very much! Keep up the great awesome, way out work! Krista, you're unicorn pieces are some of your greatest. Correct if I'm wrong, but it seems a little bit of you shines through here. Excellent writing, Krista, much enjoyed, as always. Abrahm Simons Put one foot on the path of life and tread the dagger's path betwixt dark and light. |

Krista- That was very powerfull Krista, very descriptive. Just as Kelly said, I hope that Unicorn does find the ones that are in need. But, I also hope that the Unicorn does realize that there are those that believe in her, not just as a myth, but as a person. And that those people are there to help her on her way. Once again, great job! -Jeff Moen- "I'll lay around and wonder why you were always there for me" - Sugar Ray - Someday |

You know how to trap a unicorn? Stand in front of a large tree, and say to the unicorn, "Hey spike head, kiss my ass!!" It will discreetly charge you with its thirsty vengeance and it's one horn. RIGHT before he drives his golden horn through your evil heart, jump out of the way, and the poor bastard's horn will be stuck in the tree. Then, poach his horn, and never have to work another day in your life!! (i loved your prose work, very mythical and inspiring as all your works are) |
