Mademoiselle Annabelle Normandy Landings June 1944, just south of St. Mere: Did I ever tell you the story of Mademoiselle Annabelle? Well I shall. It was way back during the Second World War, we were landing in occupied France to fight the Germans and a rascal named Hitler who thought he was going to take over the world. We had different ideas, so as a part of the invasion of Normandy we were dropped into the woods by parachute just south of a small town in France, where we got quite a reception, the Germans were waiting and they started blasting and some of us hit the ground running and a few ate a bullet sandwich thanks to those lousy Germans that acted like we were spoiling their breakfast and then some shots came from the direction of the village and do you know who it was shooting; well it seems Mademoiselle Annabelle and her entourage had been forced to entertain those occupying troops on many occasions and they had their fill of accomodating those particular German soldiers so those ladies along with some other French Resistance fighters opened up on those Germans and before all of us landed they had killed or captured the bunch of them; and as Ed Sullivan would say on his show many years later, they put on a "really big show" that night for us the grateful soldiers of the 82nd Airborne. I really enjoyed your story, and the smiled at the welcomed surprise to our soldiers that M. Annabelle must have brought when they were landing. Misc |

Impressive, despite the shortness, dear James. I am grateful that you are alive also thanks to this courageous young woman. War stories get to the bones. Margherita |

Thank you miscellanea, James Bowie and Margherita for the nice responses...Margherita this is not a true story I just made it up because I read lots of history books and I heard that the 82nd Airborne took quite a beating at Normandy so I wanted to write a positive story that possibly could have happened with the help of the French Resistance...James |
