~Everyone else is posting stories in parts, so I think I'll try it too.~ When I was young, I spent much time at my grandparents’ home, my mom’s parents. I loved both of them dearly. Before school, my mom would take me over there before she went to work, since she had to be in at 6 AM. My grandma would then wake me up around 7:30, and get me ready in time for her and my grandfather to give me a ride to school. It was a happy little routine. One morning, when I was in fifth grade, my grandpa met us at the door. This was odd, because it was usually Grandma who let us in while he still slept. I was still half-asleep, however, and paid little attention. The bathroom door was closed, and I was told that Grandma had a touch of the flu. Satisfied, I laid in her bed as usual and fell peacefully asleep. I knew something was amiss when it was Mom instead of Grandma who woke me up. I rubbed my eyes and asked, “Where’s Grandma?” “Oh, She doesn’t feel good at all, so Grandpa took her to the doctor. It’s nothing serious though,” Mom replied. Oh, ok, I thought, and had breakfast and bathed as usual before Mom took me to school for the day. Everyone gets sick, I thought. Even Grandma. It was an uneventful day in school, full of the usual childhood insolence, like talking in class, passing notes, and chewing gum discreetly. I walked home, as usual, with my friend Theresa, and walked in the house nearly forgetting the mornings episode. I was met by my mother, who was very sober-faced. “Anne,” she said, “I have to talk to you.” This morning flooded back into my mind, along with traces of doubt. She sat on the couch, and a perched next to her. My stomach was in a knot, for I knew what was to come couldn’t be good. I was right. “Anne,” Mom said in a quivering voice. “This morning, When I said Grandpa took Grandma to the hospital, I only told you that so that you wouldn’t worry in school today. He really took her to the hospital.” I was silent. It was on the tip of my tongue to ask a million questions; Why? What’s wrong with her? Is she OK? But I kept quiet, seeing by the expression on my mom’s face that she was trying to say something shattering in a gentle way. I was right again. Her next words forever changed my life. “Anne, I don’t know how to tell you this…but…..Grandma has cancer.” ------------------ "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage." -Billy Corgan- |

This is indeed a frightening thing to learn and no amount of cushioning can soften the blow. ------------------ Now and forever, my heart hears ~one voice~. DreamEvil© |
