Kyle sat in the front row. It's not like I'm cheating on her, he heard someone whisper in the pew behind him. She just doesn't fulfill ... well. He knew the story. She didn't fulfill his needs. The other woman was in a bad marriage already. He was rescuing her. Kyle had lost count of how many times he'd heard that story. The plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the minister recited. The purposes of his heart throughout all generations. Kyle had been there too. He'd heard the pledge repeated over and over by his parents years ago. He'd watched them hug and kiss years ago. Then he'd seen them divorce and fight over him and his brother years ago. Mom loved him more than dad when he had been at her place. Dad was more responsible and loved him more than mom when he had been at his place. He'd felt the same love for each of them - a cheap imitation of a reality that was never there. Kyle was over that now. Now he went from service to service, from concert to concert, trying to get the rush everyone else felt by stepping into their head space. He could open himself up and he could close himself down. Over the course of a day he was atheist, Christian, Buddhist, wise sage and foolish sluggard. He was simultaneously Saviour and devil. A spectator in sheep's clothing. Life's short. Think hard! |

Interesting. Sounds like Kyle fit in everywhere and no one knew him. Funny how that works. A |

I can really identify with this. I came from a broken home as well. I even had diferent names at each of my parent's homes. You did a great job here... |
