"Cute as a Button" Cute as a button, how did this expression come about? Are buttons cute? They’re symmetrical; beauty is symmetrical, even, like a yin-yang. Is that what people mean when they say it? Cute as a yin-yang? That doesn’t sound right. Button is better I guess. Maybe they say it to imply that they want to touch or push you like a button. Like an over zealous aunt the feverishly tries to suck up a nieces or nephews youth, cuteness, and cooties, poking and squeezing them with jovial giddiness. Cute as a button. Maybe it’s what people say when something is beyond their relative scope of cuteness, and with not being able to articulate how cute something is they blurt out, “cute as a button”. I’m pretty sure that’s the context in which I used the phrase when I saw this little five year old girl that aimlessly walked into my store today. A certain kind of “holy sh*t” cute that makes you dissolve. A kind of cute that makes you sad; sad for blind people, sad for people that are ill-fated enough to never cross paths with such cuteness, sad that she would inevitably experience pain and heartache in her life in one form or another, sad that I wasn’t five years old again and in her kindergarten class so I could see her five times a week. Of course being five I probably wouldn’t be able to fully grasp how cute she is, and if ever asked for my opinion I would likely say she was “cute as a button”, not knowing what the hell I just said. |
