Birthday Wishes
By Larry Chadwick
Ginger Michelle 2/19/1974-5/18/2002

In my life time I have wished for many things. I remember being taught by my mom to blow out the candles on my cake and make a wish. But, she counseled, don’t tell. I remember when I was five years old wishing that an eighteen year old girl would be my wife. And of course there were the childhood Christmases that I made all kinds of wishes for gifts. Then I found the Sear’s catalog and my wishing spiraled completely out of control.

As I entered adolescence my wishes took on increased significance. I remember wishing my parents would not move in the middle of the school year. I had numerous wishes that related to crushes and loves. Most significantly I remember bartering with God in a crisis in the hopes I could persuade him to grant my desperate wish.

And my adulthood only deepened the resolve of my wishes. I wished I could experience life without so much difficulty. I wished that life would be as easy for me as I thought it was for everybody else.

Then one day I found myself teaching my son how to blow out the candles on his birthday cake and to make a wish without telling anyone what it was. And just a few years later I was teaching my daughter how to make wishes while blowing out the candles. She too got to practice keeping secrets.

Today would have been her thirty-second birthday. I sure wish she was here.

She is here, Larry...now, in our hearts,
and is indelibly printed on our minds.

But my dear friend, I do understand
the aching beat of this, your heart.

Sometimes I think it is in tune with mine.

I know how much you must cherish all those birthday memories. Remembering her birthdays keeps her close to you forever.

I certainly do...

Nancy,
Thanks...

Karilea,
Thank you so much. I'd rather blow out candles.

Kacy,
Indeed. And thanks sis.

I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Larry, understanding more than you know. In my mind Joanne never changes. In life I am sure she would now have hair mixed black and white, as I did before the age that she would be. I can always picture her with dark wavy hair and her smile so contageous. But never any of her hurt or anger. No one is really perfect, only in our eyes. How sweet that we can make the memories and toss away the hard ones. Best to you, mom

Oh Larry, I'm sorry I missed this before I do sort of understand this... my niece died right before she was born... someday maybe I'll tell you about it...

and then He created the horse...
