I was just replying to a poem in open #3, and I was reminded of a news story I saw a few months ago. It was regarding a bill for a local school district to have a dress code. The bill was based on the idea that "We need to eliminate diversity in our schools." That is an exact quote. Thank GOD it wasn't passed. That means at least a FEW people out there still respect our individuality. I wasn't so much angered by the idea of a dress code. Perhaps if they gave a reason like, we want to eliminate VIOLENCE in our schools. But apparently to whatever close-minded bigot wrote that bill, diversity is a bigger problem than violence. Besides, even though in theory, a dress code would help ease tensions between groups that modern high schoolers call things like, "Prep, Skater, Jock, Nerd," and so on, in reality, there would still be differences, like hairstyle, jewelry, and most of all personality. You can make us all have brown hair and eyes, caucasion, girls and women wear blue dresses, men and boys wear blue suits, but our personalities would still define who we hang with, who we don't like, etc. And the repression would probably make things even worse. Back to what I was saying about diversity. Isn't diversity a main feature of this planet? Isn't that why we have worked hundreds of years on accepting that not all people are one color or religion? Aren't we merely reverting to behaviour we've done before? What, soon we'll be going back to segregation..."Different but Equal Facilities," I think they called it. Just to keep people in a group where they are around people the same as them. Also, not even thinking of us humans.....what about the diversity of the planet itself? The deserts, jungles, mountains, oceans, and other geographical features; the animals.....fish, birds, mammals, insects, reptiles.....Aren't they all vital parts of the natural world? And aren't they diverse? So doesn't it stand to reason that diversity in our scools and society for that matter is a GOOD thing? That each and every one of us has something special and different to contribute? I mean, it worked for nature, at least until we humans screwed it all up. All I'm saying is to love your uniqueness, as a opposed to throwing it away just so you can fit in. That's what is killing our society, the sudden wave of conformity.....gotta stick to the trends... I personally think its disgusting. Ok that's all. I must agree 100% with your essay. Diversity is not the problem, the inability to accept that diversity is the problem. Might I suggest limiting your use of profanity to blocked out words, though your choice of word has a unique connotation? ------------------ Now and forever my heart hears ~one voice~. Sorry about the profanity, I changed it to more descriptive and less offensive wording. ![]() ------------------ "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage." -Billy Corgan- |

Excellent essay SD. I agree...diversity is NOT the problem. Many schools in my state have adopted new dress codes requiring students to wear uniforms to school. I've yet to hear any of the school officials or legislators denounce diversity (thank goodness). They have all stated that it is an attempt to reduce violence in the schools, along with the ostracism of those kids whose parents can't afford to buy them those over-priced, name-brand items of clothing. Whoever that official is who said we need to eliminate diversity in the schools is a moron. Again, great work here ![]() |

Ok, I was about to defend the ideal of wearing uniforms, but it has already been done. Also, I want to commend you for attacking the reason for the idea rather than the idea itself. I agree with you as well on that part. |

U know my view point on this ne sys. and i agree with u. Im a freak\sk8er and im proud of it and i think if people dont like it they better be able to live with it cause i will not conform for theyre needs or to suffice theyre whims. For that matter i hope everyone out there doesnt try to act like everyone be yourselves like what u want who u want, and For your sake if your picked on dont become that which has hated you. ------------------ life is short kill quick |
