Keeping Peace When you talk about keeping something, the implication is that you are in possession of it and it is precious in some way. Peace certainly is precious, but are we in possession of it? For that matter, can it be possessed? On an individual level, on a community level, on a national level, on an international level, how much peace do you see? And how much of that is yours for the keeping? It seems to me that humans have not yet earned the right to “keep peace”, because their tendency is to destroy it rather than allow it to flourish. I think “tending Peace” would be more apt: Peace is like a flower. It needs watering, feeding, nurturing, in order to grow. In neglect, it wilts and insects eat away at it. It dies. We have seen Peace die time and time again, to be reborn after such or such a war. Humans make messy wars in order to restore Peace…they could save themselves so much trouble if they just got their watering can out regularly instead. Perhaps once we have learned to tend Peace, we will earn the right to keeping it too. "Time has told me not to ask for more, one day our ocean will find its shore" ~Nick Drake |
