Second adventure of the little dime. 2. The little dime and the white thing When the little dime was thrown into the dish on the table, she rolled against a white thing. She didn't know what it was. There was a safety pin too, a button, a little broche and some beats in the dish. A little junk dish so to speak. Oh this was a much better place than that dirty drain. There was light, the sun was shining into the dish because the table stood close to the window. The little dime glowed and was so happy, she wanted to sing, but she had caught a bit of cold from laying too long in that wet drain. She thought it was a miracle, laying all cleaned up in that dish with beautiful things around her. She wanted to cry out: "Hurray, Hurray", but could hardly speak, all that came out was a loud squeak. Then the broche started yelling and so did the white thing too. "Oh stop, stop that awfull noise please". That gave the little dime a fright and she stopped immidiately and didn't make another sound. 'I only wanted to sing, because I'm so very happy", she said and told the story of falling out the little girls purse and all the things that had happened down in that cellar. "Almost unbelievable", they said and the white thing crept a bit closer and said: "You stay close to me now, I'll protect you. I'm a sweetie pie and people seem to like us. Normally I'm in a package with all my brothers and sisters, but they've disappeared, don't know where they've gone, but every time they were picked up, some voice said: "Ah, that's good, give me a gum too, isn't that nice? If you stay close to me, we might travel far and see something of the world. Come, try to stick to my side". And so the little dime did. She was still a bit moist from the scrubbing and it felt so comfortable next to this white thing. Oh how cosy it all was and a little tear fell down from her and that made her stick to the white thing even more. She was tired and dozed off, the sun had gone and it was dark outside. Suddenly there was light in the whole room. They heard children's voices and voices of the daddy and mommy too. "Come children, come eat your dinner, because daddy has to go out soon and we have to hurry". She heard a lot of buzzing going around and the clattering of spoons and forks and happy talk. The little dime listened and felt so happy. Suddenly she heard footsteps coming her way and a voice said: "Is there still any chewing gum left, because I have to talk a lot at that meeting". And in a split second a hand grabbed the white thing and put it in the pocket of his jacket. But what the daddy didn't know was that not only had he taken the chewing gum, but with it a little dime too. Oh dear, oh dear, what is happening! They sat in the dark and smelled crums of cake and tabacco. They clinched to each other, because they didn't want to loose each other. The little dime noticed they were riding in a car, she knew that, because she had been there before, when she still was in the little girl's purse. The chewing gum remembered being in a car too when she was delivered to the store. Oh oh, what would happen next. She didn't mind, as long as it would be nice. The chewing gum said: "Don't worry, it will be nice, because everybody loves chewing gums, you did hear them say that, didn't you? And the little dime couldn't help wondering what would happen next. I'll tell you tomorrow. Titia Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

Titia, Have you read the children's book Corduroy? It is a young child's classic here. Children love the resurrection and adventures of the wore out teddy bear. Your story has the warmth of Corduroy, one of my all time favorites. miscellanea |
