Double Exposure
By Larry Chadwick

It seems that my dad could never make home made ice cream but what he got the freezer overfilled with brine. Inevitably the brine crept into the ice cream. It was a challenge to eat his ice cream without puckering up. It still puts a smile on my face. Oddly enough I never saw anyone that quit before their bowl was empty. Opposing flavors.

There were a lot of hobbies my father dabbled with. He collected butterflies and moths for a while. Then he acquired a collection of model airplanes. Ham radio briefly drew his attention. But the hobby that sticks in my mind was photography. He had a 35mm camera back in the ‘50’s. All of his pictures were developed as slides. Family pictures were his interest and I still am drawn to some classics from that era which he took. I do not know the challenges of those old 35mm cameras. But the manual advance seemed to be a challenge for dad. So we have a collection of double exposed pictures. We keep them because they hold images of sentimental value to us.

It occurred to me today that I now live my life double exposed. There are background images in most everything I see. Funny how his lack of skill with the camera now echoes with his image of double exposure in my life. So I still see you dad only now you are a faint familiar image that I refuse to let go of. You always had a way of putting a smile on my face.

Larry~
I feel just plain priviledged to have read this~
For one who also must have had a parent who couldn't handle 'manual-advance' ... I can soooooo appreciate this~

I just plain LIKE WHAT YOU WROTE !!!

You just put my antiquated photo albums in a new perspective ... thank you~

That's what I feel when I look at my father's drawings and paintings. I inherited his very early work and vacation stuff. They had the most value for me.

Nice write Larry, brings a smile to my face too.

Yep! Double exposures can add depth of meaning when we're familiar with the background. You did a wonderful job on this one.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Oh Larry, this is adorable!! It touched my heart because it came from your heart and has so much meaning written in it. You know, I love to read about one's relationship with their Dad, because, like Serenity, I'm also a Daddy's girl.
Thank you so much for sharing your heart with us, sweet friend.
Hugs,
Ethel

Larry

Your words and memories brought a smile to my face as I remembered my own father's love of photography.  He used to develop his own black and white pictures. I remember many Saturday nights watching him in the laundry which had been converted into a darkroom, as I looked on in wonder at the images appearing right before my eyes.  His passion for photography has been instilled in me and although I don't have as much time for taking pictures like I used to, I think of my father everytime I pick up the camera.

Thank you for bringing so many wonderful memories to the fore.

Take care........Sue
