*note: I intend to read every post here that I possibly can, sort of to help me with my own larger writing projects, and because I enjoy reading other's materials. I will start small (only 378 words in this) and see what happens. I am always open to any suggestions and opinions. Thank you. “Marry me.” She was stunned. One second they were calmly watching a movie in the basement den of his parent’s house. The next, his soothing deep voice is asking her to make the most important decision of her life. To think about it made it ironic. He so calmly, almost too calmly, just spoke two simple words that could change both of their lives forever. Was twenty too young to marry? She instantly made up her mind that age didn’t matter. Did she really love him enough? That was what the question really was. She found that she had no doubt that she loved him enough. No doubt existed in her heart. The looming block was simple enough to identify. It was this: was she ready? A quick search of his eyes told her that he was ready and that no doubt hid in his mind. The source of her block was one from her past. One of past disappointment mixed with something akin to guilt; the guilt of not knowing. She had been engaged before, two years ago She had been just a few weeks over eighteen. She had loved this other man. Their relationship hadn’t been perfect, but what relationship is? She had been left at the alter. On her day of glory and joy, she had been left alone. Left to wonder why, and given no answers to even hint at an answer. To this day, she hadn’t seen him again. Why dwell on the past? There is never anything good that comes of it. Instead, she decided to forgive him for his deed (for there is magic in forgiveness; magic in the forgiveness one gives, and more so in the forgiveness one receives), but until now she hadn’t been able to forget and move on. Until now. Yet reality called her back to the now, and she knew what to do. She looked deeply into his eyes before she gave him his answer. She saw that he was extremely nervous and scared, so she decided to end his waiting with two words as simple as his, but with a meaning just as complex. The words rolled off her tongue like warm sweet honey, and they felt just as right. “I do.” September 28, 1998 ------------------ Tout s'en va, tout passe, l'eau coule, et le couer oublie. |

Such a myriad of thoughts that went through her mind, in probably what amounted to only a few short seconds in 'real' time. You conveyed this very well, and the emotions in it are clear. Thank you for sharing this! |

This is very good. A good story grabs you on the first line (this certainly did) and makes you want to read it entirely (which I did). I wanted to know if she would say yes. Glad she did! Ok..you can write more now! Look forward to reading more from you. |

how well you captured those emotions when the "big question" is asked, Alain...i was married a month before my 21st birthday, divorced at 26...call me a pessimist, but i think 20 is too young, though it was a good learning experience ![]() |
