Road Trips By Larry Chadwick I remember many road trips. My first memory is based on pictures my dad took when I was only two. But the evidence proves I had a good time. Little has changed since then. However, there have been a few exceptions. One of the most memorable trips they took without me. It was a trip to California to get my grandpa. I woke up in the middle of the night startled with worry. I prayed the most earnest prayer of my eight year old life. Upon their return I was not surprised to see the body damage on the car. Nor was I surprised that the wreck occurred right when I had prayed. When I was nine years old we took a trip with our parents and uncle Bob and aunt Rosemary. Apparently my brothers and I were having too much fun with his three girls. Actually all six of us kids had gotten on all the adults last nerve. Our childhood dread finally came true. Uncle Bob actually stopped the car. He lined us up side by side on the shoulder of the road and demanded to know what he should do with us. Since none of us had an answer he ordered us back into the car where we rode in silence for fear he might come up with an idea. When I was thirty-seven my parents took a road trip with us. Dad took over driving our Monte Carlo SS in Idaho on a mountain pass. In a matter of minutes my wife and I were sharing fearful glances. Finally, without saying a word, we both slid so low in our seats we could not see the road. It was shortly after that dad made a plea for a new driver. It turned out that he scared himself in his attempt to drive like me. He confessed it was harder than it looked. I am starting to understand why they call life a journey. It is a lot like a road trip. And I always did like to travel. May 29, 2004 If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

"I am starting to understand why they call life a journey. It is a lot like a road trip. And I always did like to travel." Some very nice stories and thoughts in this little piece, Larry! It's something else to be 5 years old and in a car for 12 hours straight, which is something I've experienced myself, but it's probably something else to be IN a car with a 5 year old for 12 hours! It is all a journey; who's driving? ![]() Oh, make me Thine forever |

LoveBug, I used to think it mattered who was driving. Now I just think it's about the journey! You're the best, thanks for reading. And I checked out your prose. Seems it's past time for you to post some more. So I brought an oldie but a goodie! ![]() If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |
