Assignments From My Daughter #16 By Larry Chadwick L.L. Bean wasn’t really her style. But then again that hat. She had to have that hat. It would work so perfect with her classroom. So she sat down at her computer and proceeded to write a whole sequence of topic titles. Relying on her kindergarten experience she got her scissors out and separated each title into a single paper strip. When they were folded in half they went into her hat. And the hat went to her high school English classroom. It would do her juniors and seniors good to write impromptu papers on random topics. Assignment #16 “Today’s Music”: “Hey pops, did you hear the song by ’blah blah blah’?” “Who?” I always asked. My musical taste had always been diverse. About the only genre eliminated from my library was classical music. But somehow my tastes for younger music had gradually disappeared with my youth. I could prove myself reasonably well educated. Definitely well informed. Semi-refined. And increasingly musically illiterate. It never ceased to surprise her. And it never ceased to shock me. “Jazz. Honey, daddy almost always listens to smooth jazz.” But if it interested her then it interested me. And more often than not she would send me the music she introduced me to. Inevitably I loved it. It is part of her legacy now. Melodies, words and rhythms that are tied in memories to her. Today’s music often needs an ambassador. Then I recall my youth. And I hear echoes of those exact conversations that I initiated with my parents. It reminds me that our youth are today’s musical ambassadors. Deaf ears cannot hear music. Listen to our youth and you will end up listening to today’s music. Best of all you won’t regret either choice. I don’t. April 26, 2004 If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

Larry: You were a good dad, to listen to your daughter's music so willingly. I can remember my son asking me to listen to Credance Clear Water Revival one time and shuddering! I did listen however and was so surprised to find I actually liked SOME of it. It made me more cooperative in the future I know! I do not like RAP though! Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Hi Larry C, :-) I'm glad you took and take the time to listen.....to the music and youth! Youth of others and youth of yourself! We all need to open our ears more willingly to both! Your daughter was blessed to have a father so willing to listen and you were blessed to have a daughter so willing to share, introduce, and even educate you to today's youth! Your words played a soft melody to me that can be heard by all! Keep on keeping on my friend! pictureme :-) |
