My First Love By Larry Chadwick I never struggled with whether romantics were made or born. It was so obvious that she would be mine. Granted some persistence would be required. But I had plenty of time and was in no hurry. So with patience and romance in mind I was content with my ritual of going to bed with her every night. I knew exactly what page she was on in her high school senior annual. And my bed was made perfect for the book to rest in an open position against the foot board. If my pillow was propped up just right I could go to sleep with her freshly on my mind. Mrs. Larry Chadwick seemed to suit her well as she would plainly see. It was, in fact, my first encounter with a broken heart. Perhaps such early training solidified my understanding of the contribution of pain to a rose colored perspective of life. More likely it was the foundation on which my courage in love was built. Indeed she let me down gently demonstrating the class I knew she possessed. Lessons learned early are lessons learned well as ones mind has not yet been jaded by life. She allowed me the dignity to carry my head high and feel no shame in any quarter. Gifts like that are hard to find. Especially when you are five years old. Thank you Miss Maxwell for your grace and kindness to me. But remember age still does not matter. June 9, 2003 If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. [This message has been edited by Larry C (06-10-2003 09:49 PM).] |

Larry, Isn't it wonderful that we can clearly recall the emotions a first love evoked and aslo that we cannot remember the hurtful words of yesterday. Beautifully penned. Kethry Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind. Unknown |

Fabulous presentation of loves first memory. I especially liked what you said about knowing what page she was on, and how you propped her up! Very Cool, Larry Dear~ |

For me...it was Mr. VanNorman. Oh, an excellent fifth grade teacher, he was the epitome of kindness, strength, cleverness, wit, charm, and wisdom. He was right up there next to my father. Do young people fall in love with their teachers? I think so. It's a kind of love that surprises them, but they will, and perhaps still do, go out of their way to see what the teacher might need, or would require of them, and those students excel, just to see the heart of the teacher rise in the teacher's eyes. When I heard that my Mr. VanNorman passed away during a fishing trip, alone in his boat, I experienced my first heartbreak. He never got to hear a young woman come back to him to say "Thank you, Mr. VanNorman, for all you did for me." Bless you, Larry...for being one with me in believing that it's never too late to say "thank you...". |
