Summer Heat

July's air was thick and hot with steam rising from wet pavement after
a summer rain had failed to cool the temperature.

The sudden shower caused the grass to look unkempt, as rain beaten
blossoms lay twisted and flat amid leaves upon the grass.

Children returning to the streets ran barefoot through puddles of
muddy water chasing a rainbow to the "Pot of Gold".

Wet laundry pinned to a fallen clothesline drooped limply across
a picket fence, splattered now with mud and dead grass.

Rows of birds lined telephone wires preening drenched feathers,
each puffed twice its size.

"Old Dog" panting from the heat, stood wagging his tail in
a swarm of gnats, shook suddenly, spraying water like a fountain
and fell off balance, too hot or tired didn't bother getting up.

Evening drawn near, muddy children returned home without their "Pot of Gold".

The still wet dog braced on three legs raised his fourth to scratch an ear as
a freckle faced boy yelled, "Look O’le Dawg's smillin"!

A torn screen door slammed three times, once for each child,
and "Old Dog" followed stopping just outside.

The smell of something he would taste later drew his nose against the screen.
Distracted from heat a moment, he lay by their wet trail to wait.

"Always be yourself, but the best self you can be."

A lovely picture painted very well.

Death comes not when we cease to breathe, but when we cease to dream.
