The night was damp and sultry. Except for the sound of the
crickets, the bog was quiet. They sat in a circle, these
creatures of the swamp, and talked quietly in the hours before
the dawn. During one particularly long lull, the red fox spoke,
breaking the silence.

“If you could be granted one wish, what would you ask for?”
Looking directly at the bullfrog, he nodded for him to speak
first. The frog thought a moment, flicking his long tongue
absently before he replied. “I would wish to be a different color
than this boring green. Blue perhaps, or a nice copper color.”

“Be careful what you wish for,” replied the copper rabbit.”This
color is no fun for me. I spend the day hiding from my enemies,
living in constant fear of detection. They seem attracted to my
color. I wish I was green.”

“Well, blue is no better,” said the snake. “Everyone hates my
color. They despise me for it. Copper is much better, or even
green. Or red, like our friend the fox,” eyeing the fox with
envy.

Ahhh, my friends,” said the fox. “You don’t know what trouble
this awful color red has caused. It is much too easy to spot. The
dogs hate it and chase me constantly. I never have a minute to
myself.”

They were quiet for a long time, digesting what had been
said. Finally the fox spoke again. “Perhaps it is better to learn
to love what we are and make the best of it. Wishing for what we
are not simply adds the problems of others to our own.”

As they pondered this, they began to nod in silent understanding.
The fox was right. They were, after all, special, each in his own
way. Better to be me and know who I am than someone else, and be
a mystery to myself.

The fox was indeed very wise.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
