Here's a story with the same character from "A Side of Eggs" A Day in the Life of Mariah May O’Neal "Mariah May O'Neal, will you please come down here right this instant young lady!" An exasperated mother yelled up the stairs to her five year old girl. They were going to the shopping mall together for Mariah's father's birthday present.Mariah clambered down the stairs with her yellow galoshes on her feet. She dragged behind her a bulging suitcase and her pet lizard on her arm. Her face was covered in white baby powder. A slight dusting was also left down the front of her overall bib shorts and bright yellow t-shirt. Mariah’s mother, Genevieve, gasped when she saw her. “We have to leave right now. Now I have to get you cleaned up. And what did I tell you about leaving Jasper in his cage?” Her words drifted to the empty foior as she pushed her daughter back up the stairs which she descended. “What’s the suitcase for?” Genevieve demanded. “I’m taking it along.” “Shopping? You don’t take a suitcase shopping.” “Why not?” “Because.” “Because why?” “Because you only carry a suitcase to where your staying overnight. Were not staying overnight at the mall, so you don’t need it. Period.” “Okay.” Mariah said happily and bounced into the bathroom and preceded to wash the powder off her face. Her mother grabbed the wash cloth, soaked it with hot water and rubbed off the dust until her daughter’s face was once more visible. “You rubbed too hard. I wanted to do it myself.” “Yes, I know. But I could do it quicker. And we are in a hurry remember? Okay. Chin down, arms up.” The apholstry was sticky from the heat and Mariah breathed a heavy sigh and stuck her head out the window. Her new blue shirt and jean shorts matched her butterfly clips. Her favorites. The Chevrolet Transom rolled into the parking lot of Bettermill Mall. The shops were amazingly crowded for a Monday afternoon. Mariah was forced to hold onto her mother’s hand. “I look like a baby.” “You are.” “I’m not a baby. I’ll be 6 soon.” “I don’t want to loose track of you. I’m sorry. But you’ll have to hold onto my hand.” “All right.” Mariah breathed out and gave in reluctantly. Genevieve picked up the pace. Mariah’s white Keds danced on the lighted floor tiles “What are you doing?” “I can’t step on the black ones. Only the white.” “Well, try to just walk normally.” “Can’t.. Oh, look Mom. The fountain. Can we stop by the fountain, please? I want to put lotsa pennies in.” “Okay.” It was Genitive’s turn to be reluctant But Mariah led her to the fountain where she continued to plop pennies in, watch them float to the bottom, and stick her hands in the water. Genevieve turned her focus to her watch and was reminded again that they needed to be home with the gift before Damon got off work at 5:00. In the meantime Mariah had climbed up to the edge looking suspiciously at something at the bottom of the fountain. Genevieve snatched her daughter by the belt buckles and set her on the ground. Mariah looked at her mother, was about to growl at her, but decided against it. She had those bulging veins in her forehead and her eyes were about to bug out of their sockets, so she walked along side her mother, stepping on white and black tiles to Sportsman’s fishing department. Mariah selected a yellow and purple lure and threw it up in the air “This is the perfect present for daddy,” Mariah announced. “We’ll get that as long as you put it down. And...” Genevieve pulled out a brown rod from the middle of the rack. “This fishing rod. He’ll love them both. Come on. Let’s go home and surprise daddy.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “This is a fabulous present. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” Mariah’s father held up the fishing rod and kissed his wife on the cheek. “And thank you to you too, little fish.” He kissed Mariah on the top of her head. “Mariah?” Her mom looked at her. “What is that in your mouth?” “Oh,” Mariah muffled, spitting the object out onto the palm of her hand. “The other part of daddy’s present.” THE END! |
