How I remember 1985. I pitched a blue Care Bears tent next to the lilac bush winding through the chain link fence in our backyard. The Vietnamese kids who lived down the street in the brick apartment building would stand a few feet off, watching me guard my flowers from their fingers. 1994. My Dad chaperoned a class trip to an Indian reservation when I was in Eighth grade. One of the performers there had long black hair, smooth features and an ancient mystery about him with his ceremonial feathers whirling while he danced. He called for a volunteer from the audience to try the dance steps. I was in love with him. I sprained my ankle and had to be carried from the stage. He carried me down and said I‘d be ok. It was worth it. 1987. I saw a girl hanging upside down from a tree branch across the street of the house we had moved into the night before. Her name was Karen. We spent the day gathering freshly mowed grass from the neighbors’ yard to make ourselves giant birds nests. 1999. Ann took me out to lunch after class my senior year in High School. She made small talk before suddenly telling me that I couldn’t go on the senior cruise with the rest of our friends. I made her drive me home, and slammed her car door on the way out. 1993. I learned a solo for our Christmas Choir concert called “Cool Yule” because a boy named Casey Clemmens who always wore tight jeans and a cowboy hat already had one. I wanted to sing with him. The first time I sang it to the teacher he said there was no way I wouldn’t get it. The second time the whole class listened, including Casey. I forgot the words...and the tune. I ran out of the room crying. Later that day he patted me on the back and said “it’s ok, you did a good job”. 1994. Ann, Lillian, Karen, Melissa, Sarah, Wynne, and me. Sitting in the gym bleachers at the end of class. They were trying to teach me how to shuffle a pack of cards. 1997. Summer youth camp in New Mexico. My best friend and I decided to go our separate ways. She spread rumors about me, and I ended up sitting by myself most of the time. Thursday night I cried and cried. Brandon Sparks took me outside and hugged me, told me everything was going to be alright. And it was. "Glory remains unaware of my neglected dwelling where alone I sing my tearful song which has charms only for me." |

Hi Saxoness, I liked your list story! I have written a couple of these myself and I have always liked the style. I noticed that you kept your memories centered around friends and school, I think that's what helps pull it all together. I really enjoyed this, you did a good job! |

This was great. I ought to try this type of thing sometime. It's always good to keep your memories with you. At times they are the only thing left to hold onto. |
