Back Roads

Give me a map, here's my keys, check the oil, pretty please.  Know I'll call, soon as I arrive, let you know that I'm alive.  That's the litany we go through before I hit the skyways blue.

Love my road trips.  I would garner all the windshield time possible, if I could.  My thoughts are my thoughts, my CD's rumble and the seats quiver with the bass and beat, you can feel the heat and I only wish I could sing, but that is another reason why I love the solidarity of the road trip!  I can be quiet and think or not think and sing and feel the words of 1968 all over again…didn't know the freedom of free in 1968.  So the music transports me and I am….a young woman again.

My last road trip was so enjoyable.  Kansas is not all flat, you know.  So get off the highway, take the back roads.  See the small historical towns and enjoy the highway that can be as swift as any road to the given destination such as any interstate might be, and always, always you shall see so much more.  You can see your dreams through the windshield as there is no need to consider heavy traffic.  Oh, one can see so much…

Graceful hawks circling in the sky.

Let the road carry you, and carry thoughts of strife away, settle yourself into the hum of the blacktop and the hum of your voice.  Only one thing to watch for during the hours of ride and that is….

The deer.  Watch for the deer.  Especially now.  The guardian angel that travels with me flicked my thoughts of reverie and brought me back, back in time to see the buck on the north side of the road.

He stood proud and loomed large, his tawny coat shining in the afternoon sun.  His crown of bony outgrowth was astounding in size.  His chest massively grand and his eye…his blazing eye caught mine and that is when time stopped and we each passed on thought of some kind, and in that brief but long moment, I saw all of life, and wondered, what did the buck see?  As quickly as a thought and time can pass in a whisper, I wondered, "will he move," and he moved, and ran parallel to the car, and I thought, "will he cross," and as that thought began to germinate, so my foot began to touch the brake.   As the brake grasped hold to the mechanics of the wires to slow the car, the buck breached the ditch and crossed the road and quickly,

briefly,

once again caught my eye, and said goodbye.

So the rest of my trip was encircled in the majesty of the vision of the buck, tall, proud, lithesome of movement, and because of the back road trip, he caught my eye, and I shall always have that mystical moment as a photograph in my mind.

Take a back roads trip…and you too shall have a visit of majesty.

It's amazing what we can find if we take the road less traveled, isn't it? This is a wonderful piece. I enjoy all of your prose pieces, they are so full of wisdom. I'm waiting for the next!

the promise of more - pleases me almost as much as this reading gave me - On bicycle trips last June as on other prior vacations - I pedaled in the early quiet of the local state park by the beach. The deer, serene in their protected state, let me stop close, and share their paradise. Did we share common thoughts? I know not, I know I loved reading this.

Thank you for taking time to read, Mr. Yeats...prose pieces can be long and it takes patience to get through them at times!  Glad you shared a memory of a deer...they are gracious, beautiful creatures...

I really  enjoyed this, it brought to mind many personal experiences from biking and such in the country.  It was a simply joyful piece that is easy for me to relate to.  Thank you!
