When writting a poem is there any correct rhyme scheme? All help is appreciated. I know we can write as we choose and use the rhyme scheme that we feel more comfortable with, but what is proper ? or is there a proper way? Should the end word of the 1st. line rhyme with the end word of the 3rd line and the end word of the 2nd. line rhyme with the end word of the 4th line? Or should the end words of the 1st & 2nd.line rhyme and the end words of the 3rd. & 4th lines rhyme? Or should just the end words of the 1st and 3rd. line only rhyme? Or just the end words of the 2nd. and 4th line only rhyme? " To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you " |

They are all correct, Paul. A rhyming scheme can be anything you want it to be. You can use any of the forms you mentioned or make up new ones of your own. For example look at The Raven by Poe... Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore-- While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. "'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door-- Only this and nothing more." This rhyme scheme is a-a-b-c-c-c-b-d-b-b. Sounds very complicated he made it seem effortless and he stayed consistent with it throughout the poem. What your mind can conceive your poem can achieve,,, [This message has been edited by Balladeer (12-24-2002 12:48 AM).] |

Yep. The only time you need to adhere to a predetermined rhyme scheme is when you follow a traditional form, like sonnets or villanelles. You don't really have to worry about those either, as long as you don't mind Nan yelling at you. |

Michael...Thanks for the advise. Poe is way above my head but what I understand is structure it anyway we like most of the time as long as Nan isn't watching. LOL Whatever sounds better to the ear and has a smoother flow. Serenity~ Finally some good advise from the Queen of New Orleans...Thanks. Ron...Thanks I will try to stay clear of Miss Nan. Now all I have to do is get her to give me a detailed list of stressed & un-stressed syllables for the entire english language.LOL Christopher...Tis easier for me to learn rhyme than free verse. Maybe one day I will write one of those trashy Rap songs and retire. LOL If you want to explain free verse or any other type of verse I will appreciate it...Paul " To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you " |

doh. the irony is that i feel completely confident that i could point at something and say, "that's free verse." for all that i've tried half a dozen times to find a way to explain it, however, i would feel more confident explaining rhymed poetry... go figure. |

All... Please excuse my ignorance. The way I see it is anything written that doesn't rhyme is pretty much free verse, right? Please excuse me for being a dumb A_ _ Paul. Christopher...They sure like to pick on you, at my expense. LOL Thanks...Paul |
