Hey...well it's happening again! This time? I realized something, as I stopped, glass of wine in hand and watched their flight across my kitchen. I saw the flutter of wings, and watched them join together, and a third, attack the two, separating them...and a memory dawned on me, of watching pidgeons on the ledge outside of my office window in the spring...THEY AREN'T SWARMING...THEY ARE MATING!!!!

SOMEBODY COULD'VE TOLD ME...and hmmm...does this mean that spawning spawns FLIGHT?

Hmmm...serenity is off to test the hypothesis...

Oh...came back to express my horror at my second realization--that they always fly right at ME!!!
*shudders*

Okay, I'm gonna need an old priest and a young priest...<--Time for an exorcism!

Things may not always be what they seem. Flying roaches are cannibalistic by nature. That's why at times you may find only feelers or small wing parts around. One could have been trying to make a snack of the other and the mate showed up to save her. It can be very disquieting to  see someone eating your honey.....but enough on that subject

Sounds like your house should be featured on Wild Kingdom!

The thing that surprises me most is that serenity didn't recognize her pets'.. I mean pests'... mating rituals and differentiate them from their more aggressive cannibalistic ones...

Well, Nan...there's nature? and then there's nurture!!! (oh..and it was only because of the wine I was brave enough to stand there and watch!)

and yep, MM, no sooner than we ditched the mice--You should have seen me reasoning with them as I put the poison out---now THIS.

And then? sigh...you don't wanna know about the real vermin...But actually, the roaches, are a given 'bout this time of year. Termites are next. In my neighborhood, all ya can do is turn out the lights! (kinda fun, THAT!) HEH.

OH...and Michael...I did want to ask..I've been told by a "local" bug man type dude, that this particular flying "palmetto" roach thing, is more active this year because of drought. He says they are coming in through the drainage pipes in search of water...tho I believe the doggy door has something to do with it too (although that may just be my lying eyes again!   )

Drought?... I was talking to my daughter's inlaws yesterday - They had JUST returned from your International Jazz Festival.. and they told stories of CASKETS coming up out of the saturated ground... Hm..

ah...smiling, somebody must have explained why we have tombs...chuckling...and yes, as a matter of fact, that graveyard that I just wrote of yesterday, (the Fleming Plantation Family cemetary) is one of the few that had traditional graves dug, and that did indeed happen during a flood. But there's not much danger of that right now. Alas. Looks like we're in for a scorcher this summer.

and here ya go: Here's a pic:

We used to go crabbing there when I was a kid. It wasn't so much of a tourist attraction then.

OK - Lemme see if I've got this straight... In 'wet' times the dead emerge from the ground... In 'dry' times the roaches are breeding and devouring each other in your kitchen... In the swamps - I see alligators... Um..

Did you write all this for Balladeer's 'Hometown' thread??..

This entire thread made me throw up! YUCK I hate bugs, and don't even go there with the mice thing.  If even they want me to die quick just lock me in a room with a bug that moves fast (let alone fly) heaven forbid.  Ask Nan, the vengence I took on some poor little ants   Bugs and mice are meant to live outdoors, and humans indoors, and nowhere have I even seen a manual to incorporate both in one dwelling with any success.  E-gads! Flying roaches that eat each other!  Write a book about this place, bet you would give S. King a run for his money.

I SO agree with Mysteria.  My worst nightmare is to be trapped in a room with a bug. Especially flying roaches.  *shudders*

I try to explain to Dave just how much of a nutcase I am about this LOL. I don't think he fully understands quite yet, but he will in time, the poor guy lol.

If I were you serenity, I'd probably be locked in the bathroom (after thoroughly searching it for no bugs of course) huddled in a corner.  Seriously.  My phobia is WAYYYYYYYYY beyond logic or meaning.

I could even handle the mice (yes, I'd still do the scream-and-stand-on-a-chair thing) better than the roaches.  I could definately handle the floatin' coffins lol.

Roaches *shudders* I can handle spiders, but get me near a roach, and there's no controlling me.
