Okay, the dedicated server is now a reality. It's been built. I've spent much of the past several days configuring it (okay, stumbling as I learn to configure it), though I won't be able to do too much until DNS propagation kicks in. For those interested in details, the machine is a PIII 500, with 128 meg of memory and a 4 gig SCSI hard disk. We'll be running standard Linux and Apache. Should be pretty fast. Physically, it's located in Fort Lauderdale, in the South area of the Broward County business district. We'll have multiple Internet connections through AT&T, UUnet and Exodus, so it should be pretty reliable. If anyone is really interested (asking a programmer about his computer is a lot like asking a doting mother about her new baby - boring for most people), I'll write up something and post it. But that's not the purpose of this post. This is in the Q&A forum because I have a question for everyone. I'm getting real tired of calling our new server "the dedicated server," and those of you who know me know that's just not my way. All of my computers, going back as far as I can remember, have had names. This one needs a name, too! I am not necessarily bound by tradition, so all suggestions are welcome. But I will also quickly add that all of my computers are named after mythological entities. My main computer these days is Isis (Egyptian goddess), my other two active computers are Hera (Greek goddess) and Ares (also Greek, he-kicks-butt God of war). I only recently retired Athena, my main desktop for over five years (and tend to shed a tear at mention of her name). Other names that have already been used include Gaea, Hermes, and Apollo. Here are some of the names I've been considering. All of these are either Greek or Teutonic, should you care to search for more information. Demeter (or possibly the Roman equivalent of Ceres, both of whom were the Goddess of Earth and Harvest). Eos - goddess of the dawn. Sif - battle goddess, wife of Thor Erato - muse of love poetry Determination of names, in the past, was always based on two factors: what the computer was used for (hence, Hermes was a file server) and the "personality" of the specific computer (Hera is a bit of a bitch at times). We're still learning the personality, but we know the purpose and can get some ideas flowing. So... let me know what you think the new computer should be called. And I'd also like to hear your reasoning. |

Okay Ron I'll give you a few: Iris: Goddess of the rainbow. She was a messenger who conveyed divine commands from Zeus and Hera to mankind. Demeter-Goddess of Earth. Nourishing mother bringing forth fruits. Fortuna-Roman goddess of luck. Calliope-Muse of heroic poems. She was the cheif of muses. ------------------ Julie ------------------------- Thou who has given so much to me, give one thing more: a grateful heart. >George Herbert |

Love the idea of naming compters Ron. (I can't tell you what I'd name mine, cause this isn't the adult forum right now and the way she's been acting lately...) N-E-Way, had a few thoughts: Nox- Mother of Chaos, and sometimes that's what passions is like! Chaotic! Venus- certainly appropriate as of late, what with all the amazing amount of, ahem, "connections" being made lately! And my fave: Clotho- An aspect of fate, who spins the web of life, much as we poets spin a web of words of life. Like fate, many here have a lasting and profound impact on the lives of others. |

May I suggest Calliope? Calliope (the ‘Fair Voiced’) is the eldest of the Seven Muses and is the muse of epic poetry. She has been known as a mediator, settling disputes with her wisdom. But when, Calliope, thy loud harp rang-- In Epic grandeur rose the lofty strain; The clash of arms, the trumpet's awful clang Mixed with the roar of conflict on the plain; The ardent warrior bade his coursers wheel, Trampling in dust the feeble and the brave, Destruction flashed upon his glittering steel, While round his brow encrimsoned laurels waved, And o'er him shrilly shrieked the demon of the grave. from An Ode To Music, by James G. Hunin or munin perhaps, the ravens sitting on Odin's shoulders whispering wisdom in his ears? The forum Oracle? Bit tired right now so I'll be back with some fresh ideas in a bit. ------------------ Now and forever my heart hears ~one voice~. DreamEvil© |

That's it, guys? Okay, right now I'm leaning towards Ceres/Demeter, Clotho, or Calliope (the fact they all begin with "C" is purely Coincidental). I find it interesting that virtually all of the suggestions so far have been female symbols (not too sure about the gender of those birds, though). The "personality" of the dedicated server is starting to take shape in my mind, and I thought I would share some of it. She is FAST. I just reindexed all of the poems on the new server, including the original OP and OP#2, and what can't be done at all on this server went quickly and smoothly on the new. I was almost left with the impression she was bored. She is COMPLEX. I have only scratched the surface of what is available to us, only touched upon the thousand and ten options that can (and in many case, must) be set. There are, in fact, three different levels (that I've discovered), all very different from each other. The level you and I see every day, what I call the interaction level, is by far the simplest of the triad. The next level down, the web server (we're running Apache), determines to a very large extent the interaction level and has more switches and options than a nuclear reactor (and far fewer safety valves). Finally, at the lowest level is Linux, the operating system. The only analogy that seems appropriate is weather patterns - incomprehensibly intricate and damn powerful. Finally, she is DIVERSE. I have three web sites set up so far (none complete, of course), and each is entirely different from the others, both in terms of looks and in the way they behave at that interaction level. They are like three different faces for the same entity. And three is only the beginning of what could easily become a menagerie of dozens. Janus only had two faces. Maybe we should skip the mythology theme and go with Sybil, the real-world character Sally Field made famous? |

Perhaps a biblical reference instead from Mark 5:8, I believe; "Call us Legion for we are many". ------------------ Now and forever my heart hears ~one voice~. DreamEvil© |

Well, now - It does appear that you're having quite a Field day there... Considering all the diverse fun you're having, I'd say go with Sybil... You can't be calling her Sally, now - can you???....(googols) |

Ron, I don't have a suggestion for a name but just a question for you! When do you sleep? You seem to have your hands full! ------------------ Denise |
