Lisa,

I just had a couple of thoughts to your post which I hope may help you a little.  They are at least something to think about and consider regarding your husbands situation.

I believe that generally speaking, people appreciate authenticity in certain
situations over eloquence of words, especially when it comes to emotional
issues, and deep things of the heart.  It might be worth considering for
your husband to write a poem himself for his daughter which expresses the
way he feels.  Even if he feels that his writing may not be adequate to
do so, usually the heart of a person shines through if he or she actually
wrote it.  I bet your husbands poetry is by no means poor, but even if it
were, I would be willing to bet that it would be more effective to touch the
heart of his daughter, than one that even Robert Frost incarnate wrote.
I say this out of my own experience.  My wife has given me things that
touched me and communicated love, in cards, poems, etc.... but I would
secretly be disappointed to find that someone else wrote it for her.
Because it really wouldn't BE her.  Even if it described many noble
feelings, it wouldn't all match up because it came from someone else.
How would you feel about a love poem that someone else wrote that your
sweetheart gave you?  I would say "why didn't you write me a poem?"
"Because it wouldn't be good enough" might be the reply.
"Yeah,  I doubt that, but even so I want to hear from you!"
Think about your little 6 year olds who are not Rembrandts or Picassos,
but I guarantee their mothers would rather have that little scrawled piece of
crayon smeared construction paper on the fridge than any masterpiece
just because it's them.  And they shine through!!!
I personally would encourage him to write it himself, and if he has alot of
trouble you could help since you are a poet (and I bet a good one).

If I were his daughter (I can't say for certain because I'm not) I think
I would be touched most by a poem from his own hand, and ultimately by life
and actions which prove in the real world what the poem says.
Just something to think about.  I rejoice with him in his newfound reunion.  The rejoining may not always be the easiest, but it will be worth it!  My prayers with you!
