Emmy, yes, there is definately a song called "The Sound of Silence." It was made famous because of the movie "The Graduate"(in the 1970s). I saw the movie last year in my Hummanities class. When I heard the song, I just loved it.

Poet, thanks. If you can ever find the lyrics, I'd love to know.

The Sound of Silence

by Paul Simon

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

I LOVE Simon and Garfunkle.....
"Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water
I will lay me down....."

"Cecelia, I'm down on my knees...
I'm begging you please, to come home
Making love in the afternoon...."

Let It Be Me

by M. Curtis, P. Delanoe and G. Becaud

The Very Best Of The Everly Brothers, 1988 Warner

I bless the day I found you,
I want to stay around you
and so I beg you, let it be me.

Don't take this heaven from one,
if you must cling to someone
now and forever, let it be me.

Each time we meet, love,
I find complete love.
Without your sweet love
what would life be?

So never leave me lonely,
tell me you'll love me only
and that you'll always let it be me.

If for each bit of gladness
someone must taste of sadness
I'll bear the sorrow, let it be me.

No matter what the price is
I'll make no sacrifices.
Through each tomorrow let it be me.

To you I'm praying,
hear what I'm saying.
Please, let your heart beat
for me, just me.

And never leave me lonely,
tell me you'll love me only
and that you'll always let it be me,
let it be me.

(That does not qualify as old. I'd call that pre-contemporary at best! Now "Crying in the Chapel," released when I was ten years old, is a different story. Any takers? )

Crying in the Chapel

sung by The Jordanaires
Elvis on guitar
Floyd Cramer on piano

Here ya go, Ron

You saw me crying in the chapel.
The tears I shed were tears of joy
I know the meaning of contentment
Now I am happy with the Lord

Just a plain and simple chapel
Where humble people go to pray
I pray the Lord that I'll grow stronger
As I live from day to day

I've searched and I've searched
But I couldn't find
No way on earth
To gain peace of mind

Now I'm happy in the chapel
Where people are of one accord
We gather in the chapel
Just to sing and praise the Lord

Ev'ry sinner looks for something
That will put his heart at ease
There is only one true answer
He must get down on his knees

Meet your neighbor in the chapel
Join with him in tears of joy
You'll know the meaning of contentment
Then you'll be happy with the Lord

You'll search and you'll search
But you'll never find
No way on earth
To gain peace of mind

Take your troubles to the chapel
Get down on your knees and pray
Your burdens will be lighter
And you'll surely find the way

That's the one, Balladeer!

This is the oldest pop tune I can remember when it was popular.

Gawd, it has been such a long time. Sorry about that. I've been without internet access for three weeks now. I should be able to get on a little more frequently now.
