I am wondering how long an excerpt of a copyrighted work may be.

If the work is about 180 pages, is an excerpt of 3 or 4 pages acceptable?

I would think that it would depend on

1.  How it is being used;
2.  In what context;
3.  For what purpose.

If something of mine were to be used, that would be the first three questions I would ask.

I was going to post it for interest and learning in the English Workshop, about English phonetics.  The virtue of the excerpt is in its clarity and conciseness, which I don't find in any other explanations.  Also the book that it comes from doesn't seem to be in publication anymore: Historical Outlines of English Sounds and Inflections, by Samuel Moore.
