Simply put an IP address is similar to a post code ( or zip code ) for your computer, your IP is generally a temporary number issued from an ISP. They are used to direct traffic directly to the destination required, as every IP is unique . To everyday users the IP is not that important, we can use names which are transferred into IP addresses by nice DNS computers ( Computers that have lists of names which correspond with IP numbers ). This is very simply put ( and probably not very well put ) but I hope it is some help. Craig ------------------ Yes, I admit your general rule. IP addresses have no direct correlation with area, I come from the UK, check out my first reply then check this reply. As you can see my IP address is different, I haven’t moved, I just logged on to a different ISP. That said as ISP’s have ranges of IP’s to hand out it is possible to see if two people are using the same ISP ( in most cases only the last numbers in the range will change ).
