are closer than they appear
sistas that you keep distancing
yourself from
are closer to the beat in your heart
than you'd want them to be
perhaps if i kissed you
as you slept silently around 3am
then you'd know why i breathe

while lying next to you
tempted to touch
what will perhaps never be
completely mine
these games we play with our minds
have no winners
and with these cards i have in hand
i fold and quit
for i'd rather play solitaire
than this cheating game of
strip poker
perhaps you'll never understand
why i smoke the same cigarettes
as you
just to taste the kisses
you've barred from my lips
and maybe you'll never understand
how i can be bored
in the middle of excitement
until your presence is felt and seen
what will it take
to make you glance inside me
and know that the interior decoration
all these gifts unopened
and the fire that burns
were all for you and you alone?
seems like someday never comes
sometimes yesterday was a waste of time
and tomorrow is a repeat of today
but if i could hold on

then maybe my tomorrows
won't be a rerun like

for the six millionth time in my
26 years
maybe someday you'll look at me

for vintage sake (after all
i do love to taste the best
wine around...)

and you're too busy
looking over her head
looking for castles and mansions
when a well-built home
is already made for you
comfortable and warm
affordable and ready for you
to just move in
