Al Fumayle says: 'Met a hell of a fine woman the other day.... My heart was still in the right place -- properly in my pants,' he laughs like he was the one that invented it. 'Still have that sneaking suspicion that every woman is better than every man, sure as there's a God in heaven.' What??? Al has that way about him -- takes getting used to but he's easy to listen to -- with effort. Al continues to solve the situation. 'People in the female category are always so different -- so alike.... And each contest is always uncommon no matter the puddle the floundering and wallowing takes place in.' Al holds onto himself, laughing like he just learned how and he's making up for lost time. Al's like that -- he has that way about him but once you get used to it he's easy to abide, you know, with some effort. Of course Al's not finished -- come to think on it, Al's never finished which some might say is a good thing -- especially Al. 'Take for instance this hell of a fine woman I met the other day. So simply complex and just right for show and tell or teasing on the playground.... Hell of a fine example of just what I'm always trying to put my finger on about people in the female category.' |

Marq, Always glad to have you posting here. This is such an interesting character study. I'll try to get back with a more in-depth view of this but I will say on the initial read, I enjoyed this very much. Brad |

Hi Marq, "Al Fumayle says: 'Met a hell of a fine woman the other day.... My heart was still in the right place -- properly in my pants,' he laughs like he was the one that invented it. 'Still have that sneaking suspicion that every woman is better than every man, sure as there's a God in heaven.' What??? Al has that way about him --" I found it easy to get into this poem. I think we all know at least one "Al". Good opening section, the only suggestion I have is to lose the "What???", the tone of the piece is set with the other words and What??? doesn't seem to add to it. "takes getting used to but he's easy to listen to -- with effort. Al continues to solve the situation. 'People in the female category are always so different -- so alike.... And each contest is always uncommon no matter the puddle the floundering and wallowing takes place in.' Al holds onto himself, laughing like he just learned how and he's making up for lost time." The poem on a whole has a really good "feel" to it and this section I think has a lot to do with that. "Al's like that -- he has that way about him but once you get used to it he's easy to abide, you know, with some effort." I liked the rep. of "with some effort". "Of course Al's not finished -- come to think on it, Al's never finished which some might say is a good thing -- especially Al. 'Take for instance this hell of a fine woman I met the other day. So simply complex and just right for show and tell or teasing on the playground.... Hell of a fine example of just what I'm always trying to put my finger on about people in the female category.'" Good ending, I interpreted it as a person talking lots on a subject but in the end showing just how ignorant they are of that subject. The speaker's voice really comes through in this poem and has a consistent tone to it. I enjoyed this one Marq, thanks for the read, Trevor |
