People who have read some of my other poems will notice that this is rather different. I wrote it 3 years ago, and I'd greatly appreciate feedback since I'm not sure whether I love it or hate it! The Pearl At the bottom of the ocean an emerald haze Too deep Grope around the slimy rocks to find a hole to let me out Greensalt my veins Drowning weeds grasp my limbs fingers long and blind There a treasure more beautiful than light A pearl shimmering where flickering fish reflecting colours of ecstasy of pain chaos symmetry Fragile careful if I touch when I touch hand reaches gently prises from bed of sand the pearl strive towards the sun frenzied energy seizing body freezing mind On the soft down of the shore dark line drawn around us Hold the sparkling sphere eyes reflecting eyes in mesmerising depths a million dazzling splinters blinding me tearing my skin forming a pattern rivulets of blood doubling the fragmented form twinkling bleeding on the whiteblackdrywet sand until the sea hungry mad void reclaims us Lotharingia "For God's sake, he's a poet. Poets are meant to feel miserable. Otherwise, what the hell are they here for? What are they going to write about?" Tom Holland |
