Driving the constructed highway seeking a heaven for study we zone in on the bright star ahead it glows neon in the seething night it calls to us "Eat our pancakes!" - an adventure directed by the God of coffee. Sitting in our booth, having fought with Godzilla for our regular section the waitress takes our order, and we giggle at the prospect gossip before study. The people about us, they talk about real life. We find our friendship hidden in over-butterd pancakes and gasoline coffee. My tragic friend drops her sugar packet - or it drops itself - into the sea of fuel that, these days, frequents our brains. And just as I shovel in the maple syrup bread, she actually tries to recover the sugar trapped inside the gurggling paper. "top dee indanity" I hysterically muffle through the famous pancakes. And while the giggles and laughter suggest happiness... we secretly wonder if this is how the world is... if this is how it will always be. And like the choked pancakes, and gritty coffee, we sift through our troubles like ghosts wondering where we belong. And the opaque night waits to take us back to college dorms, and shallow people. A memorandum of life that I forgot to read. [This message has been edited by Ophelia (edited 02-10-2000).] |

HA! HA! HA! I am the first to reply! So you got it posted. Yippy! Yippy! Skippy! I love the additions (so I am tragic now, huh? LOL). I am quite impressed with the ending. How is it that you are so good at reading my mind? I must tell you my favorite line (well...after "Eat our pancakes!" ) is "we secretly wonder if this is how the world is...if this is how it will always be. And like the choked pancakes, and gritty coffee, we sift through our troubles like ghosts wondering where we belong." The truth that it screams is scary. Thank you for posting this poem Ophelia. love always, Dru |

i love this poem. i wrote a poem about being waffle house once, and it was very similar. it's sobering to see the other side of the world outside of academia. i love the comaderie between the two central characters. there are very many lines that i thought were incredibly well-written. And while the giggles and laughter suggest happiness... we secretly wonder if this is how the world is... this is an excellent way to introduce a world apart from the laughrer and giggles. And the opaque night waits to take us back to college dorms, and shallow people opaque night. i love that description. again you suggest that there is a gap in the two worlds. excellent poem. |
