Standing on a precipice And facing evermore… Mistakes I’ve made behind me- No clue what lies before. I’d like to think I’m wiser- If only that were true But wisdom seldom plays a part In things I say or do. I contemplate the wasted years The ones that lie behind- And know I’m in the short rows now And wonder what I’ll find. Before too long the time will come Which most folks seem to dread. When I’ll have drawn my final breath And they will find me dead. I’d like to write my epitaph- If it’s all the same to you- “He tried each moment of his life- To himself to be true.” |

I like this kind of honest reflection. This could be any one of us contemplating the usefulness of our existence and the value of how we have lived. I feel asking these kinds of questions are themselves a sign of growing wisdom and humility in a person. Perhaps it will lead to truth before the end, the kind that lasts forever. == |
