I look into the mirror-
I’m amazed at what I see.
Could that grey haired old timer-
Possibly be me?
The silver hair, the wrinkles
I recognize the scars-
From fists and stools and pool cues-
And a couple totaled cars.

Amazed by all the damage
That the years have wrought, I see
That if I had a say in it-
I’d choose to not be me.
I’d rather be a better man
A younger one, as well-
A man of better choices
And a lot less raising hell…

A man who’d been successful
And made his mark in life.
And reared successful children-
And had a happy wife.
Who could rest upon his laurels
So all the world could see-
That he was not a failure-
But, alas, that isn’t me.

John...You're not alone my friend. We go thru life taking what it gives us and always wanting to be more than we are to please others but in the end if we are true to ourselves and those we love I feel like we done our best. Enjoyed your poem...Paul

I’m not an old man, but I’m not young anymore, or so said John Mellencamp. That’s where I am now at age 42. Honestly, I say bring on the grey hair and wrinkles. They are the bumps and cracks in the long, well-trodden road of your life, and they stand to say, “well we’ve made it this far and we’re not done yet.”

Anyway great words my friend. This felt like a song like ‘A Pirate Looks At 40’ (literally the only Jimmy Buffet song I like) but better. Well written.

My opinion, but the only failure is when somebody quits fighting, which makes the teller of this tale a king among kings and queens. Wisdom is not earned by an easy road, sage wisdom and insight by a rosy bed. The path of pain is the path of kings and conquerors. The path of failure belongs to the sage. Welcome, warrior, you're still standing, and that, too, is divine.
