I paused at the space between heaven and hell In a place that my dreams have described to me well, Full of counterpane faces on overlapped time Etched like thoughts in a mirror, or words in a rhyme, Then I opened the door of the caretaker’s room To see countless sad souls fading into the gloom And the caretaker sat with an all knowing stare Casting dice with the devil for every soul there. Then the caretaker said with a smile on his face “You have made a mistake, you are in the wrong place!” But Satan stood up, and said “Why don’t you stay? For you may get to liking the game that we play.” As I looked in his eyes, I saw limitless fire Yet they painted a vision of arctic desire, So I answered his question with one of my own “If I write you a verse, will you leave us alone?” And the devil replied with a sneer on his face “If you can’t, will you give me your soul in its place?” I agreed his request, then I sat in the shade Though my soul shuddered at the suggestion he made, Then I took out my book, and I opened it wide And the spirit of love set my writings inside, As the devil looked down with a sense of surprise At the smile on my face, and the look in my eyes. A sense of expectancy painted the room And the devil cried out in degenerate gloom, “ You have caught me unfairly, and so unawares With the words you have written from someone who cares!” Then he stamped his hooves firmly, and vanished away For there wasn’t a lot more he really could say, And the souls smiled and sang as they rose through the air When the devil was done by the written Lord’s Prayer. |
