The Family's Neighboring Plot

Oh,
Don't leave me here.
Oh please,
don't leave me here. . .
alone.

Older than me,
the inscription on the stone
and I'm not young anymore,
and my heart's not as strong
as it used to be.
I've been reading it often
since my grandmother died
and was placed in the ground
beside it;
I've been reading it often
since my mother died,
and my father;
since my wife died,
and the kids
forgot where I live,
and before I became
just an old man
with white hair
on his face,
some on his head,
an old man
who speaks little
because he has so little
anyone wants to hear.

I've been reading it
all these years
and only now do I see it clearly
within my mind -
only now,
after all these years
do I understand
what it has to say.
Only now do I know the pain
of being . . . so alone.

Awesome poem. Brought tears to my eyes. I'm only 38 years old but I have been contending with feelings of loneliness lately. So this really pulled on my heartstrings. 😢
