I have been writing poems lately for friends and family that have passed and other profile type pieces I like to think of as "portraits". That is the roots of this piece. I’ve written a piece or two about more than one of you that has gone on ahead into the light. I’ve been told, I did right by the words I spoke. A vision of that person, I did evoke. Our days are numbered, this is true. We never know when our time is due. With that in mind, it made me wonder who would say a word or two about me when my time came. Would they know more than just my name? At the risk of tooting my own horn, I thought I might share a bit about myself without drawing scorn. There isn’t a whole lot to tell that you don’t already know, I’m a pretty open book and only half as dumb as I look. I’d like to be thought of as having a kind and thoughtful heart, an ear and shoulder to lend. I’m probably as silly and goofy as they come. Truth be told, in spite of my often obnoxious demeanor, I’m painfully shy. But if I can tell a joke that brings a laugh or smile, then it's been worth my while, my work is done. I’m no hater, but I can be a debater of issues close to my liberal, progressive heart. For as long as I can remember, I have had the notion I hold to be true, that it matters not your religion, race, gender preference or politics that counts. Are you an arsehole, is the question that counts you out. Not one for confrontations, I have been known to holler and shout. Just ask my children, they’ll rat me out. I do have a trait of which I’m not proud. When I get excited, I get loud. I don’t even realize it at the time until he asks why I’m yelling. I don’t even want to know what the neighbors think about the late night howling. Back in the day, I was known for a bit of cooking, These days, carry out is better looking. I’ve had my share of struggles so I at least have been blessed to have a reason for being here for others. On days when I feel broken, I try to think, as I pull my pieces back together. That I am like stained glass. Beauty is beheld as the light of God shines through. I’ve no time for petty differences of religion or lack thereof. They are all as right as they are wrong. The Omnipotent is what it is and always has been. Who am I to argue with that? I’m content to ponder in awe. Just as I often do before I find myself writing. Of course I would hope my words, of the gajillions of words I’ve written, a few of which will have touched some hearts and minds here and there and more before I go. For those of you that feel this writing premature, I think you should know that I wrote my epitaph over thirty some years ago. It goes a little something like this: Carve my Ass in Stone to show that I am dead from decisions made with head embedded in that on which I sit. And for those that don’t like it, a stone for you to kiss. LGR(C)9/7/20 [This message has been edited by Lori Grosser Rhoden (09-07-2020 04:43 PM).] |

Lori...This place wouldn't be the same without you dear sweet lady. Like Ron's motto Welcome to our family of friends. Sort of reminds me of an old Eagles song 'Hotel California " " You can check out, but you can never leave" Take care dear lady and remember we are all only here for a little while. Enjoy your presence here very much...Paul ~~To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you~~ |
