Dangerous Waters The signs say “Stay alive, stay out!” But we all know signs aren’t meant for us. Our eyes only see what we want to see. Everybody wants to play. Some drowning persons go down easily, Even in peaceful waters. A lost look on the eyes, Only a smidgeon of resistance As they fall away. Many enter, believing the water Not deep enough to be of danger, Only to be swept away, Eyes in shock at Being dragged down By a swift undercurrent They didn’t know existed. Some flail and panic, Losing any rational thought held. They strike the hands that reach to them— Pull and hold down others Who try to save them, Often loved ones, In their attempt to stay afloat. A survival instinct that only prolongs Their time of turmoil, In waters they freely entered, Coming to its inevitable conclusion. Most drowning persons die looking up, Remembering the signs. To witness is to wonder, “How could I have saved them?” Maybe it comes down to saving yourself first. Michael Anderson |

Thank you, OwlSA, so glad I drew a little excitement out of you. Been trying hard to give a broader perspective to my pen of late. Sill a little dark in here but I think my heads above the surface at least. |
