Civilized is quite a word, and tricky to apply- Especially in the world we live, and view with jaundiced eye. Civilized? Then tell me why there is crime on every hand- And hate and turmoil are the norm, all across the land? Civilized? They murder babes, before they’re even born- Like trash, unwelcome, undesired, they, from the womb are torn! Civilized? Divorce rate soars! And broken homes abound- No homes, mere dwellings do we find; which know no happy sounds. Like laughter, singing, “I love you’s”, Ah, such a tragic plight- In which to find our once-great land, on this November night. I beg to differ, Sir, or Ma’am, at last I’ve realized- We face a savage jungle, now; this world’s uncivilized! |

Yes, John, you are so right . . . but, almost every time I think the world’s all wrong and that people are all bad, somebody does something beautiful, compasionate, altruistic or heroic, and I find that I have to eat, at least, some of my words. Horror sells more newspapers and attracts more TV viewers than beauty, kindness and gentle community spirit, but yes, the horror is there, in abundance – but there is also so much good in the world that seldom makes the news. Even in our daily lives, we are inclined to notice the horrific things and let the good things slip by unseen. However, I have often said that if people could reach the level of civilization of Vervet monkeys (and I have watched them closely in my indigenous forest garden), to quote Louis Armstrong, "What a wonderful world" we would have. |

You are so right, and that is well put. I am the balance stone for your positive views. That is a necessity. |
