Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2019-10-06 05:20 PM

The quiet rings in my ears;
no TV or appliances on,
no furnace nor fan,
no crickets,
only a fly that
sounds like a jet
as it buzzes my ear.
There is no wind,
no barking,
no driving by.
Just slow uncertain
tapping on the keyboard
breaks the silence
and steepens the sense
that something is missing.
It resonates deep inside
echoing off empty canyons
carved by years of depression.
Slowly overshadowing the fire
that used to blaze within,
smoke soundlessly seeps
between canyon walls.
An apparition of my soul
echoes emotions
that lie motionless.
The emptiness would
be unbearable
if not for the
insulating apathy,
numbing lack of inertia
and blessed mortality.
There are hopes
and prayers
and dreams
that the missing
might be found,
restored,
healed.
More often
it is a submission
to acceptance
of that which is gone.
Perhaps it is grief
that has left me so.
Something is missing
is all I know.

May it be found, Lori.  I relate to this one so well.

You crossed my mind when I wrote it. You are the only other person I know, from what you write, that has a working knowledge of that particular kind of awful. Thank you for reading and relating. ~L
