The Sharing They said "She kept a cat," But there was little evidence. They said "She cared for it and it was her life." On the table there was the cup, the saucer - and little else in the cupboards. An icebox, some cold oatmeal inside, a tin of sardines. A kettle on the hotplate, a teapot standing alone. I wondered, did she feed the cat bits of whatever on the saucer, the teacup holding water as she fed the scrap of fluff? Then clean it up, to sit in the sunlight, dishes transformed - for high tea? There is a melancholia about this very descriptive piece. I can visualize a lonely, older lady, lavishing what love remained on her feline companion. Excellent write. |
