Almost Wholehearted

I hate this feeling
this need
I hate to feel this need to try

Try for perfection
and try for acceptance
To try for tolerance
and try for sufferance

The inauspicious spoils of effort
of striving in places where you should not be

And this feeling
This empty, withering feeling
of not enough
never enough

Along with the secret knowing
The sad understanding that you've given up
what you should have had
for a thing you didn't really want

I hate this feeling
this need
I hate to feel this need to try
that keeps me going round and round
