Mornings First Cup I sat on the deck this morning, overlooking the birdbath, the hibiscus with their multiple shades of red and yellow and white. I looked up the trunks of Pine Trees, ninety-feet tall, three feet around . . . old trees, even older than I. I smelled the air . . . the strong aroma of fresh, brewing coffee coming through the screen door. I listened to the birds’ songs of Spring, as they danced their colors, calling for mates. And I heard the tread of your skippered feet, the squeak of hinges. "Thank you", I said, as you handed me mornings first cup, kissed my cheek, and smiled brighter than the sun, coming up . . . © wesley james beard, jr. |
