Early evening on the front porch sipping on cold ones while listening to God’s creation trading shifts Before the crickets and cicadas start warming up for the night pigeons and turtle doves croon in alto while song birds whistle, tweet and trill soprano The sun is setting to a symphony of sounds and he says “How quiet it is tonight.” “Can’t you hear the birds?” I ask. “Yes, the pigeons and the doves.” “What about the others?” “What others?” It was then that I discovered that for him the trill was gone as were the tweets, chirps and whistles I knew he had long lost the ability to hear crickets and the near deafening sound of cicadas But the birds… It never occurred to me until then I didn't know when it began but I knew he would never be trilled again |

Heh.Heh Humor personified, Lori. Good to see you still have your warped(?) sense of what is funny. Very good to see that!!! ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

I was enjoying the “cold ones” and melting into the evening sounds, the front porch, then boom! I heard a loud: "WHAT!” and a slap to the forehead and an “oh-brother!” Enjoyed the read, I can see the humor Jerry wrote about, but a bit of sadness in the context. Nice one Lori!! Thanks JL for the read..hook, line and sinker! Yes, a hint of sadness, but he can still hear a motorcycle a mile away and tell you if the motor is running right. In the lower ranges he hears better than I do sometimes. Lori ![]() |

Oh wow... nice evening on the porch. But yea, hearing loss is no joking matter. I have so been there...almost to the point Of no return...insert cochlear implants. The sounds of nature are music to my ears these days. Not knowing what we've got 'til it's gone it's home in more ways than one. Beautiful poem Lori.. |

I found the whole poem intensely sad, given that 'he' can't hear those sounds any more, whether for physical, emotional, mental or spiritual reasons, it is achingly sad for me. Owl |

As a night owl, I'm often there when they settle down to roost, and still there when the dawn chorus starts up. As such, I find the thought of not being able to here the birds, a tad disturbing. Well written. |

Redstart There is some comfort in realizing that you really don't know what you are missing... There is still a world of things to be heard. You probably wouldn't notice if you quit hearing the AC or your refrigerator running or the hum of a ceiling fan. Lori ![]() |

I love every bit of it. As I have also always been a night owl taking, on all the overnight shifts I could. I hear the mocking birds at night and small limbs falling on my roof. The tiny frogs that come out in hordes when it rains and that little hoot owl in another place. I once thought the frogs were ducks out there in the yard , until I went out to look and was greeted with a surprise. So much to learn when you move from north to south. Even the distant sound of a train passing by and the louder roar of trucks and motorcycles on the road. I hear the TV and the humming of the fans and the ever present hum of a different kind that is always in my inner ear or head. I sleep with the radio on just above my head as I am never in a soundless state. I would wake up in a start if all went soundless. Sometimes it might be nice if less noise came through, but maybe I would not really know if I were more comfortable or not. Thanks for the interesting post. Jo |
