For a penny or two I remember as a very young girl going to Cooper's drug store with a few pennies to buy some cigarettes for my mother. In those years she could not afford a full pack. The clerk would sell them to a young girl without any thought about it. Then I might also have one or two pennies for the large candy case. It was on the bottom shelves of a glassed in case near to the floor so you could bend or kneel and feast your eyes over the large array of penny candy, until you choose one or two pieces. The clerk was very patient. The decision was not something you made swiftly. Should it be the red wax lips, or a wax bottle of sweet syrup, a box of chalky white fake cigarettes. Maybe the strip of paper with the colored dots of hard candy you can take your time picking or licking off the paper or a small package of black gum Juicy Fruit maybe a block of double bubble gum? Oh the choices you can make if you had a penny or two. Just remembering. |

Ah . . . think I was walking in your shoes, my friend - I remember most of that too, the exception being the cigarettes - I was always able to buy the whole pack (without regard to age) for my mom even if we needed other things (never saw them for sale individually and wouldn't want to touch them any way - always thought them low-some things and would never pick one up after it was lit - stink smell took days to wash off my fingers). loved the piece/memory... jimmy |

I hear you, Jo. I bought cigarettes from Hughes Grocery Store for my parents as a kid also. I remember buying the greatest tasting baloney in the world, it was course grained, and to go with it something called hoop cheese. Eh . . . Memories. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Jwesley, I never did take up the smoking theme. Nasty thing is it is. As A teenager I tried one and said "not for me". I used my use my dollar I earned on Saturday night for baby sitting and I had other things to buy with that.A cherry Coke on the way home from school because the soda jerk was cute. One day a vanilla Coke another the cherry coke. Only every other day. And I bought a new pair of white socks to go with my brown and white saddle shoes at least once a month. as they wore out fast. Thanks for sharing memories with me., Jo OH, as for the cigarettes the clerk took out two cigarettes from the pack and handed them to me. LOL |

JerryPat Pat and BluesSerenade. I love looking back to see what I can remember. We had a milk delivery as did most others. We had a box on the window sill in the pantry in which we put the milk. I remember the round neck milk bottle where the cream settled before homogenization. When it froze it popped up out of the bottle. I always got a kick out of that. It was that nice cream we beat up for strawberry short cake. JerryP. Was that bologna/baloney German brand? Did you ever have fried bologna for Lunch Bluesserenade, It was a large case in the drug store.Other things were sold oh the higher shelves.Thank you both for sharing your memories also. Jo |

Oh yes indeed I had fried bologna for lunch, for snack, for . . . whatever, Jo. I don't remember if the bologna was German brand or not, I never remember seeing a label just the cheese that they sliced by hand. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |
