Zombie-Land (from Riding the Greyhound)

Zombie-Land
(from Riding The Greyhound)

Bodies
of the living dead
ignore me
living
in row 15A,
drivers side,
next to the window.

I huddle
as close to the window
as I can,
bare-heels tucked tight
to butt-cheeks,
shoes stuck in place
by the stickiness
of whatever it is
carpeting the floor.

I listen to the wheezes
and moans,
the occasional squeaky sighs,
the whispers
of unintelligible words . . .

Shuffling, dragging feet
catch my attention –
a shadow drifts by
in the isle

I try to become one
with the plastic façade
surrounding the window
and will the stabbing beam
of the overhead light
to become dim,
but please – please
don't go out.

The obese woman
in the seat beside me
jerks,
wheezes,
and in the glance
I take in her direction

all I see are teeth
and blood-shot eyes.

My overhead light flickers,
goes out,
I squeeze my knees to my chest
knowing
they're not ignoring me
because I am no different
than them,

a zombie

with no beginning

no end.

I have ridden the hound many times in the late sixties, early seventies, my friend. I experienced quite a few sexual situations on the hound. I'm sure you did also, but you're not the kind to kiss . . . er . . . and tell. Enjoyed.

Such a vivid memory, dear Jimmy. It gives the idea that nobody dared to fall asleep due to anxiety etc.
