you sit in the middle of the swamp
its time-worn
images of the past fresh in your thoughts
a place where
warning signs are posted here and there
old, almost unreadable
but still viable
cypress knees rise from the earth
in their twisted forms
eyes of the gator
barely perceptible
above the green algae water
the sounds
come to you from ancient times
screeching birds and the harrumph
of frogs
your thoughts race back
in time
when pirates bold
lurked within the scum-covered bayou
counting evilly-gained lucre
bawdy girls, even ladies so refined
traded flesh for trinkets of gold
and danger tenfold
what is the swamp
if not a brutal reality
and when we dare venture there
and hear the old come to us
in thought and wonderment
a chill sets in
and burial chambers open up
the dead walk with us

Love it, Jerry, especially the first half!  And what a beautiful smile that is in the photo of that gorgeous, magnificent angel!

Thought about not showing the gator, Lori, seems that it overrode the poem for your attention. One post card coming up.
