       Lost Highway

Only fog and memories
walk this road
that even Time forgot
as it quietly morphs
(reclaimed) to forest floor,
tunneled and framed
by ancient furtive oaks,
broken stone walls, and
fleeting split-rail remnants
of man's audacious follies
and schemes to delimit
     Nature,
beckoning all to seek
its lonely, secret
  â€˜vanishing point’
in the spectral Autumn
    mist.

Really enjoyed your poetry Bruce. You piqued my curiosity about "Old Rt. 1, in Maine, so I looked it up and found it to have a very interesting history.

My source for anyone's perusal:

Like Route 66 ... there are parts of old Route 1 that were abandoned to morph back into wilderness ...

Never been to Maine, but I've traveled the length of old 66 more than once. The first time was in '71. Even small planes would land and fuel up along some of the desert stretches.

Touch, but don't look

Both 1 and 66 are nostalgic highways.

I'd rather look at trees than a big old highway but we have to have both I guess. Good poem though!

I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather...not like the passengers screaming in the back of his car.
