Walkin' Up and Down Memory Lane

When I was a little boy
I remember planting a small tree
in the big back yard of my Grandma's house
at 705 Dresden Ave., Louisville Kentucky;
it was a big two story house
with a full basement, and as I remember,
only a few blocks from the Kentucky Derby,
we used to make good money
when the Derby was running
by telling people they could park
their cars in front of our house
or the neighbors and we would
keep an eye on their car
so nobody bothered it,
of course, there was no way we
could provide safety for every car.
Back to that tree I planted in Grandma's yard,
it was only a small twiggling
and I planted it as a school project,
but I can't remember it growing into a big tree
in that big back yard,
but I remember this small boy
thinking it would look big and beautiful someday
in her big back yard,
planted halfway between her house
and the alley and garage
and I can't recall one other tree in her yard,
sometimes my thoughts are vague because I
didn,t always stay with Grandma,
I do remember back next to the garage
she had snowy white-aged trestles
where she grew delicious concord grapes
in the proper seasons, whenever that was,
and I remember filling my belly
while I was filling a bucket
so my Grandma could fill her jars
with concord jams for later in the season,
I wish that small tree I planted
had grown as well as her grapevine.

Mellow reminiscing James. My own Louisville story goes back to 1974 when I bought a 1970 GT Torino at 'Dixie Motors' out on Dixie Highway for $1800.00 cash. For those that know, it had a "Cleveland 351," 4-barrel, 4 speed. Fire engine red with a big gold stripe on either side. Fun times there and fun times leaving. Thanks for the memories.

More feelings and fewer words please
